    Plan Your Day:

You'll need at least half a day (4-5 hours) to visit Rangitoto Island.

Summit Track - gentle incline to the top, 3.1km - allow 2 hours return.

Lava Caves - add on 45 minutes for this diversion from the Summit Track.

Rangitoto's Wreck Bay - visit this heritage site at low tide by following Islington Bay Road over lava fields to the Boulder Bay Track - allow 2-hours return.

Please check the time of the last ferry at the start of your trip - a clock on the wharf will indicate the last departure each day.

From time to time, adverse weather conditions require us to sail into Islington Bay Wharf instead of Rangitoto Wharf. This means there are some changes to your walking time on the island.

It may take up to an extra hour to walk to and from the summit from Islington Bay, and the track is shared by vehicles. We recommend you plan your walk accordingly and note the time of the last ferry leaving the island.

If you are unsure of which wharf we will be sailing to, please call our customer care team on the morning of your departure.

  • Book your trip time ex Auckland, and return on your choice of same day Ex Rangitoto Island departures.

First timer

the trip was great. forecast was for heavy rain but luckily it was only drizzling on and off on my way to the summit. ferry was comfortable despite of the huge waves...and now for the walk. it was my first time to visit rangitoto and to do a hike. and I was literally struggling on the Summit Track because I wasn't used to the rocky path..but I still enjoyed it after I reached the summit. the clouds just cleared enough for me to see the beautiful sight. I would love to comeback again.

Review Rangitoto Fullers 360

Trip on the Ferry from Auckland was good and our climb/walk up enjoyable. Unfortunately it started drizzling on our way down, so we got quite damp and with the wind picking up it was quite cold. We had finished our walk early and noticed that the Ferry had arrived early. There were a lot of children around so we approached the Ferry and after they had dropped the passengers+_8, asked if we could shelter on the Ferry our of the cold and rain. A definite NO came straight to us and when I started complaining the guy said he would check with the “Captain”. Again we were told NO. They would be ready for us in about 25mins. Again I made it clear that we were allowed cold and wet and that there were a lot of children. We just got a shake of the head. We turned around and hurried back to the shelter area that was wet and cold. On the way back we suddenly heard the horn of the Ferry and the same person then stood on the deck waving at us to come back and we were then allowed inside. I was utterly disappointed that a lovely day had been spoilt by someone that just could not think about others and little children. We did not ask them to entertain us we just wanted to get out of the rain and cold wind a little earlier than arranged. A little bit of empathy and caring for others could have gone a loooong way.
